How Long Does It Take To Sew Underwear?

Tutorial: Sewing Panties

Sewing your own panties is quick and easy, and you can even recycle fabric from old T-shirts. With a little imagination, you can have a drawer full of pretty and colorful panties in no time! Visit Jodi at Sew Fearless for more information on using stretch lace.

You will need:

Stretch fabric: lycra, jersey; elastic: 4-7 mm width elastic, about 1.5-2 m for each panty; no serger required! An ordinary sewing machine that can sew straight stitch, zigzag stitch, and 3 steps (optional) is all you need.

Cutting the fabric

If your fabric is lycra, line the crotch with cotton jersey. Most patterns have three pieces: front, back, and crotch. Fold your fabric and place your pattern pieces, paying close attention to the grainlines. If the grainlines are off, the finished panties will be twisted.

Points to remember:

To maintain the fabric’s stretchiness, I prefer to use a zigzag stitch. Stretch the fabric slightly when sewing, matching the edges. All crotch seams are hidden inside! Sew each side seam of the panties, then sew the elastics!

Sewing the elastics: picot edge

Cut your elastic about 15-20% shorter than the waistline of the panties, plus a 1 cm (5/8u2033) allowance before cutting. Mark the center point of the elastic with a pin or fabric marker, then stretch it slightly and hold it in place with your thumb.

Sewing the elastics: foldover elastic

Sew the elastic with a zigzag stitch, keeping the stitches in one side of the folding line farther from the fabric edge. Foldover elastic has a slightly shiny side with a folding line in the middle, which will make it easier to keep the elastic in the same width on either side of fabric.

Sewing the elastics: regular elastic

Regular elastic may not look as nice as picot edge or foldover elastics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it! To sew clear elastics, use this method: Sewing regular elastic with zigzag stitch. Stretch the elastic slightly while sewing.

To add extra support to your nighties and camisoles, sew tiny embellishments to the front of your underpants and use picot edge elastic on the neckline and armholes.
