Knit fabrics, unlike most woven fabrics, stretch when pulled, making them comfortable to wear and easy to fit. You can find a four-way stretch fabric that has both side-to-side and up-and-down stretch.

How do I know which knit fabric to use?

Take some time to learn about the different types of knit fabric before you start sewing kits. There are many different weights of knit fabric, and each one stretches differently.

1. Jersey

Jersey fabric is knit with a single needle that works similarly to knitting needles, and is ideal for sewing top-of-the-body garments such as T-shirts, blouses, pullovers, and T-shirt dresses. Jersey will stretch reasonably well, but may not recover well from stretching.

2. Double knit

The fabric is stiffer than jersey and less smooth, but it doesn’t roll in as much. Double knit fabrics are made with multiple needles, resulting in essentially two layers of fabric, which means both sides are identical and the fabric is a bit sturdier.

3. Sweater knits

Sweater knits are similar to hand-knit sweaters in that they can be made in a variety of weights, ranging from a heavy fabric for a winter jacket to a lightweight top, and they’re usually made with a thicker yarn, allowing you to see the individual stitches clearly.

4. Novelty knits

If a fabric doesn’t fit into one of the three categories above, it’s probably a novelty knit, which has a unique texture, pattern, or material, and serves as a sort of “catch-all” for all the other knits out there.

Serger stitches stretch naturally, so when you pull on your seams, the stitch moves with the fabric. A serger isn’t great for hemming knits, and you can’t topstitch with a serger.

Coverstitch machines

Most RTW T-shirts are sewn with a coverstitch machine, which creates stitches similar to sergers on one side with two parallel straight stitches and thread loops on the other. Coverstitch machines are great for hemming knits.
