DIY: No-Sew Superhero Cape | The New Children’s Museum
Prep time is 30-45 minutes with adult assistance (with adult assistance). Superhero cape is made from an old T-shirt embellished with paint using an easy-to-make cardboard stencil; use the extra materials to make your own superhero accessories as well.
Use a cereal box and scissors to cut out your cape, and a T-shirt for the front and back. A sheet of cardboard with a shape or letter cut out of it will serve as your cape’s stencil, and other materials can be used to make cuffs, headbands, and an eye mask. Don’t throw away your stencil; keep it to use again!
How do you turn a Tshirt into a cape?
Cut off the sleeves and cut up the sides of the T-shirt. Cut a cape shape by leaving one half in tact and cutting around the neckband to create the cape’s neck. Cut a large star shape out of yellow felt and glue it to the back of the cape with hot glue or fabric glue.
How much fabric do I need to make a cape?
What You’ll Require
- 1-2 yards of fabric, any color of your choice (bolts of fabric have different widths, so the wider your bolt of fabric, the more flow the cape will have)
- Scissors.
- A sewing machine or sewing kit.
- Measuring tape.
- Sewing Chalk.

What can I use as a cape?
Keep the fabric folded as it came off the bolt if you want a longer cape. If you want a longer cape, buy more fabric, but subtract 24 inches (60.96 centimeters) for the hood and seam allowances.
What is the best fabric to make a cape?
The following fabrics are recommended for the cape’s exterior: wool coating, wool melton, velveteen (i.e., cotton velvet), moleskin, and corduroy. These are my top recommendations, but they don’t have to be your only options.
