If you’re sewing jersey, ballpoint needles are a must. A walking foot makes it much easier to keep the seams from becoming stretchy and sloppy. Interfacing helps stabilize a seam that will be stretched/pulled during use (for example, a shoulder seam).
If you’re sewing with a walking foot and a stretch stitch, make sure you’re not stretching your fabric out as you sew. Jersey won’t unravel, so there’s no need to finish inside seams. If you’re sewing with a thick fabric, a seam allowance of 1/2u2033 to 5/8u2033 is fine. If you’re sewing with a thin/delicate knit fabric, the edges will roll.

Do I need a special needle to sew jersey?

All knit fabrics should be sewn with a special needle, either a ballpoint or a stretch needle, sized 75/11 and 80/12 for light to medium weight knits and 90/14 for heavier fabrics, depending on the type of jersey.

Can you sew knit fabric on a regular sewing machine?

If you don’t have a serger, you can use a stretch stitch (more on that later!) to sew your seams on a regular sewing machine.

Is cotton jersey easy to sew?

Jersey is a versatile fabric that’s commonly used for T-shirts and dresses. It’s usually made of cotton, but it’s also available in wool, bamboo, and silk. Working with jersey may seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually very quick to sew, doesn’t fray, is easy to wash, and fits well.

Can you sew jersey without an Overlocker?

Want to sew with knit fabrics but don’t have an overlocker or serger? No problem! While overlockers and sergers are great for handling stretch fabrics and creating a professional-looking finish (I love mine), you don’t need one to sew with knits.

What is a rolled hem used for?

The rolled hem is a teeny-tiny hemming technique that finishes all of the seam allowances inside the hem; it’s great for light to medium weight fabrics and, because of the size and neat finish of the hem, it’s great for sheer fabrics.

Do I need a walking foot to sew knits?

A walking foot, also known as an Even Feed foot, feeds the two layers of fabric through the machine at the same time, preventing the fabric from stretching out as it is sewn, which is why it is ideal for very stretchy knit fabrics.

Should you wash jersey fabric before sewing?

Most natural fiber fabrics shrink when washed, so if you don’t wash your fabric before sewing and then wash your final garment, your garment may not fit properly. To avoid this, wash and dry your fabric the same way you’ll wash and dry your final garment.

What needle do you use for jersey fabric?

A standard ballpoint needle, also known as a jersey needle, is ideal for most knit projects; use a smaller needle for finer knits and a larger needle for heavier fabrics. Ballpoint needles, also known as jersey needles, typically come in sizes 70/10 to 100/16.

What tension should I use for stretchy fabric?

Setting the upper tension level between 3-4, which is also a neutral level of tension setting, is best for a stretchy fabric. Step 5: Now that you’ve attached the correct needle, stitch type, and tension setting, it’s time to test the final stitch on your fabric.

How do you keep knit fabric from curling?

To keep your knits from curling, add an edge of a stitch pattern that includes both purl and knit stitches. The number of rows of stitch pattern you need to add to the top and bottom edges will vary depending on your yarn and tension.

Can I sew knits without a serger?

Absolutely possible, and even better, you can sew knits with a traditional sewing machine; in fact, sewing stretch fabrics with my BERNINA 350 PE, rather than a serger or overlocker, is my preferred method of construction. There are just a few things to keep in mind when sewing knits with your favorite sewing machine.
