THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU START

If you can’t find the right size, you can open one end and make it smaller. I used a coupon to get my fabric, batting, and piping from Joanne Fabrics. Make sure to pre-shrink your fabric before you start.

CUT YOUR FOAM

Measure your foam and draw a line to cut it to size. Dry fit your foam on the bench to make sure it fits, then cut it with an electric knife or a serrated knife if you don’t have one.

INSTALL BATTING

To attach the batting to the foam, you can use a spray adhesive for foam or a plier stapler; I chose to use it so the seam wouldn’t show through my fabric.

MEASURE AND CUT FABRIC

I cut two lengths of fabric the same size for the back of the velcro strip. This will help me line up my top and bottom plate later in the process. I bought a package of Velcro that was five feet long. I cut the Velcro in pieces and ran a straight stitch along both sides of each piece.

MAKE YOUR PIPING

Cut long, thin strips of fabric about 1 1/4u2033 thick for your piping (I ended up cutting 6 strips the length of my fabric), then sew the strips together on a 90 degree angle and trim away any excess fabric.

ASSEMBLE YOUR PIECES AND SEW

Sew all of your boxing pieces together to form a rectangle, then stitch the piping to the top plate of fabric with a zipper foot or piping foot. Turn your cushion cover inside out and work with the bottom plate to make a cushion cover.

INSERT FOAM

My first attempt at a DIY bench seat cushion turned out really well, and sewing is definitely a skill that requires a lot of practice. Did you know that you can save the images below to your SEWING OR CRAFTS BOARD on Pinterest by hovering over them and clicking on the red Pinterest circle?
