How to Start Sewing Your Own Clothes
I’m frequently asked how I learned to sew and what supplies you’ll need to get started, so here are my top five beginner sewing tips, which are also available in video format if you’d rather watch than read this week’s Sew What You Need To Know segment.
My Sewing Journey
As a seamstress, I was exposed to sewing from a young age, and with all of the online resources available, it’s easier than ever to get started sewing. Anyone can get started at any level, and once you grasp the basics, it’s quite simple.
Supplies You’ll Need
I use my mother’s old Singer machine, which works perfectly; many of these items can be found at a thrift store. For each piece I make, I keep track of the pattern, the fabric I used, and any adjustments I had to make.
There are so many patterns to choose from, but I prefer indie patterns because I think they’re more modern. There are a few specific patterns that I think would be great for a beginner, but hopefully this list will give you a good starting point.
When it comes to fabric, I prefer woven fabrics like linen or cotton because they have less stretch and won’t slip around as much while sewing, and because linen is a fully natural fibre, it will biodegrade, making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
