How to sew a with a Double Needle (almost any sewing machine)
Because a double-needle stitch is more flexible than a regular straight stitch, there will be no popped threads if you stretch the hem too far. In this blog post, I’ll show you how to sew with a double needle and any zig-zag sewing machine.
How to sew a Professional Double-Needle Hem
Serging the edge first will make your finished hem look very similar to a coverstitch hem (which is the fancy machine used on most store-bought garments). However, serging isn’t really necessary because knit fabrics don’t fray.
Step 2: Prep your sewing machine.
Two spools of thread (plus an extra bobbin if necessary) and two spool holders are required. Thread the machine as usual, with the first spool of thread going into the right needle and the second thread going into the left needle.
Step 3: Test on a scrap of fabric.
With a double needle, you can backstitch without stretching the fabric, and I usually lengthen my stitch to 3 or 3.5 for knit fabrics.
Step 4: Sew the double needle hem.
The easy Faux-Wrap Pencil Skirt is featured in my book Just For You, and Stephanie Kendron will share the skirt she made next week. Sewing 201 is a year-long selfish sewing sewalong, and this week I share a technique to take your sewing to the next level.

What are the three types of seams?
Seams are classified in clothing construction by their type (plain, lapped, bound, flat) and location (centre back seam, inseam, side seam). Seams are finished with a variety of techniques to prevent ravelling of raw fabric edges and to neaten the inside of garments.
Why does my twin needle skip stitches?
Troubleshooting Twin Needle Issues: For a basic jersey knit fabric, I lower the tension by a notch or two; for this fabric, I would set my tension to the second setting for the best results. If your machine is skipping stitches or tangling your threads, remove and reinsert your bobbin, then rethread your machine.
How do you stop a twin needle from tunneling?
Overlocking helps, but a thin strip of knit interfacing, fusible webbing, or a wash away hem stabilizer will do wonders in preventing tunneling when sewing a lightweight knit fabric.
