Readers ask: How To Sew Darts To Adjust Pants Waist?

How to make the waist of jeans fit

I’ve bought a lot of pants with a gap in the back of the waist that I don’t want people to see when I sit down or bend over. With slacks, you can actually take the waistband apart for the alteration.

Begin by pin fitting the waist while the pants are on if possible.

The amount that needs to be taken out of the pants should be divided into two darts, which can be sewn with a home machine or an industrial machine for almost any alteration.

Once the darts are machine stitched, cut down the center of the dart through the waistband.

DO NOT cut all the way to the bottom of the dart, as this will compromise the security of your stitching as the seam allowance shrinks.

Then take a hand sewing needle and stitch the dart open.

DIY darts are a great way to make pants more comfortable; without them, the dart may feel like a bump in your back, but once you open the seam and stitch it flat, the pants become much more comfortable to wear. Also, check out my post on narrowing a wide leg jean.

How do you tighten your waist without sewing?

Pull your pants up and fold them inwards, holding them on both sides at the top of your waist; if the pants aren’t too loose, this will help them fit around your waist comfortably.
