How to Sew a Basic Tote Bag for All Your Everyday Errands
This tutorial will teach you how to make a simple tote bag out of tea leaves.
Two layers of Fabric A and Fabric B are used for the shoulder straps: two 16u2033 x 10u2033 rectangles of Fabric A (for the middle panel) and two 26u2033 x 4u2033 strips of Fabric B (for the shoulder straps).
1. Cut the Fabric
How much fabric does a babygro’s straps, top panel, and bottom panel require?
2. Shape the Straps
Fold the straps in half and press the entire length into the center, then open and press each side at the same time to make four equal sections.
3. Sew the Straps
Close the straps’ opening by topstitching with a u215b seam allowance, then press the strap flat. Topstitch on the other side as well as another side to ensure that all sides of the strap are covered.
4. Sew the Bottom and Middle Panels
With a u215c seam allowance, sew the bottom panel to the middle panel, then topstitch the seam allowance in place by stitching u215b from the seam on the right side of the bag. Repeat to join the panels on the other side of your tote.
5. Pin the Top
Pin the handle straps to the top of the middle panel 3 from each side, being careful not to twist the handles; the straps will be sewn into the seam while the panel is attached to the bag. Pin the upper and lower panels right sides together.
Sew the upper panel to the bag using the same method as in step 4, pressing the seam allowance toward the top panel and the straps toward the bag’s bottom. Repeat on the other side of the strap section on the same bag.
Use a u215b seam allowance to topstitch the seam allowance to the upper panel of the bag on both sides; don’t stitch the handles into the top stitching; keep them down and out of the way.
8. Sew the Sides
To keep the handle straps out of the way, pin the top and bottom seams together, right sides facing each other, and stitch all three seams with a u215c seam allowance. Place the two sides of your tote together, left sides facing, and right sides stitched together.
9. Mark the Corners
Open the bottom seam and fold the corner into a triangle. Pin through the mark on one side, making sure the pins are lined up with the marks on the opposite side.
