What tension should I use for elastic?

In general, elastic works best when stretched 3-8%, with 8% being used only on the smaller parts of the garment because it’s a bit extreme. Remember that the more you stretch the elastic, the more stitches you’re putting on that space of elastic.

How much elastic do you need for a waistband?

A waistband’s elastic should be about 2 inches smaller than your waist measurement.

Why won’t my sewing machine sew elastic?

You could be stretching the elastic correctly as you sew, but you could be using the wrong kind of elastic (all elastics are not created equal), or you could be using too short a stitch, stretching the elastic too much, or not having the right kind of elastic for the fabric you’re using, and so on.

How do you attach a ribbed cuff?

Sewing over pins is not a good idea.

  1. Place the needle in the down position close to the first pin and line up the cuff and sleeve edges.
  2. Remove the first pin.
  3. Stretch the ribbing to fit the sleeve to the next pin.
  4. Sew with your chosen seam allowance (mine is 5/8″) from pin to pin.

How do I turn my sweatpants into hair ties with joggers?

Simply roll up your jeans once, then place a bobble halfway between the rolled-up hem and the bottom of your trousers, then roll the hem over the hair tie and tuck it under for a neat and tidy look. Repeat on each leg and voila!
