Binding a quilt with the quilt back
I made a doll quilt before Christmas and realized I’d never shared a tutorial for this quick and easy binding method. Since I know a lot of you are beginners, this is a great way to get your feet wet with binding a quilt. It works for hot pads, table toppers, or a mini quilt!
Do I quilt or bind first?
Binding a quilt is the final step in the finishing process; however, before you bind, you must first u201c quilt u201d your quilt, which means attaching the front and back with batting in between.
How much bigger should the backing be than the quilt top?
Backing should be at least 4-6″ wider on each side, top and bottom, than your quilt top, for a total of 8-10″. Trim the top and bottom edges of your backing to make them straight and square.
Do you have to use batting in a quilt?
Yes, you can make a quilt without batting, but I wouldn’t use flannel for the back of a summer-weight quilt because it can get hot.
Can you quilt without backing?
Any quilt block can be turned into quilt-as-you-go by simply quilting the finished block to a matching square of batting. Do not attach the backing at this time; simply quilt to one layer of batting – that’s it!
What is a self binding quilt?
A self-bound quilt uses the backing fabric to create a finished edge around the outside of the quilt, giving it the appearance of binding but taking far less time to complete than a traditionally bound quilt.
Can you bind a quilt with ribbon?
There are a lot of ways to bind a quilt, but one of the simplest is to use ribbon because you only have to sew it once and there are no raw edges. Leave a loose tail of ribbon about 3 inches long and pin it down the side of the quilt.
Can I use a sheet for quilt backing?
We’ll go over this in more detail later, but the short version is that you can ABSOLUTELY use bed sheets for quilt backs! There are a few obvious benefits to this: No piecing together a quilt back! This is the best benefit u2013 simply buy a sheet large enough to back your quilt and you’re done!
What is the best fabric for quilt backing?
Quilt backing can be made from a variety of fabrics, the most popular of which is quilting cotton (plain or patterned), though patterned fabrics can be difficult to piece on a large-scale quilt.
Can you use flannel for quilt backing?
I like using flannel as a quilt back because it is fuzzy and cuddly, but because it is made of cotton, it breathes better than Minky.
