FAQ: How To Sew With Sunbrella Fabric Pillow Covers?

How to Sew a Zippered Outdoor Pillow Cover with Sunbrella

I shared how I made outdoor pillows out of Sunbrella fabric for my front porch chairs last week, and I wanted to make pillows with a zippered closure for those chairs so I could flip the pillows between the front and back.

Like a hot knife through butter

Sunbrella is great for cutting with a hot knife, but be careful because the edges can be sharp. Round off your corners. This is something that not everyone does, but I think it makes for a more attractive pillow. I use my Clover Chaco Liner pen to round off the corners on dark fabrics.

Zippers!

I’m using two different zippers from my stash that are both long enough to fit the 18″x18″ pillows. I’m working with u00bd seams all around the pillow. Crease down both seams.

You zipper is marked up – so let’s sew it on!

I started at the bottom of the zipper and sewed it down just past the yellow mark I’d made, then rolled up both sides of the fabric and used Wonder Clips to keep it in place so there wouldn’t be any fabric all over the place.

Walk it in

Remember that your pillow is larger than your pillow case, so move it in gently but firmly. And there you have it: two puffy pillow cases with zippered closes that are the same front and back, ideal for distributing sun exposure on a deck.
