FAQ: How To Sew Fabric Together To Make Pillowcases?

How to Make A Pillowcase – The Smart Way!

See how I tweaked the sewing process to make it easier to sew and how I made pillowcases with an easy-to-sew!

How To Make A Pillowcase

I wanted my pillowcase to look like the prettiest high-end pillowcases, and I didn’t want to have to turn a narrow tube inside out, so I wanted to sew it in a DIFFERENT way than you might have seen so far.

A NEW CLEVER WAY TO SEW A PILLOWCASE

I was looking for a quick and easy way to make a pillowcase with no exposed seams, and this pillowcase sewing tutorial will show you how! Prints are pieced together, but there are no raw edges on the outside or inside.

SIZE OF A PILLOW INSERT

Standard pillow inserts measure 20″ by 26″ (51 cm by 66 cm), while king-sized pillow inserts measure 36″ by 36″ (52 cm by 92 cm), and queen-sized pillows have a larger pillow insert measuring 30″ by 30″ (50 cm by 76 cm).

FINISHED SIZE OF A PILLOWCASE (IN THIS TUTORIAL)

A queen or kingsize pillow case has a different loft to account for loft differences – like an inch or so – but it’s not the same size as a regular pillow.

FABRIC CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

If you want a more snug fit, go down an inch in size; just make sure it’s not too small.

HOW MANY DIFFERENT FABRIC PRINTS TO USE FOR THIS DIY PILLOWCASE?

The sharks on the panel are simple sewing projects you can do with your kids: just cut out the two mirrored huge sharks and stitch the two pieces together. I used four prints from the new Riptide collection by @citrusandmintdesigns for Riley Blake Designs.

STEP 4 – SEWING THE PILLOWCASE FRONT

Sew a u00bd (1.2 cm) seam allowance through all layers, backstitching at the beginning and end to secure stitches.

STEP 5 – SEW THE TRIM IN PLACE

Unfold the piece, then flip the Accent Trim to the front side to cover the raw edges. Press and sew in place, making two seams, each very close to the Trim edge (see image 3).

STEP 6 – HEM THE BACK PIECE

You can do a double hem in two ways: first, fold the first u00bd (1.2cm) under, then re-stitch the hem at 1cm away from the edge, encasing the raw edge; or, check out an even easier method!

STEP 8 – ASSEMBLE THE FRONT AND THE BACK OF THE PILLOWCASE

The French seam will neatly finish all edges. Align the raw edges on your left: You’ll notice that the wrong sides of the pieces are facing, and that’s fine. No raw edges!
