How to sew a dress without a pattern
I’ll show you how to sew a dress without a pattern in this sewing tutorial; it’s fun and easy, and you’ll spend less time sewing it than shopping for a new dress. The images below show the dress we’ll make and how it looks on me.
Materials
Fabric: Silk charmeuse, silk chiffon, silk georgette, or a stable silk or cotton jersey (but not very stretchy); stripes and lines are not suitable.
Prepare the fabric before cutting it.
Pre-wash the entire piece of silk fabric before cutting it; don’t use your washing machine; most silk fabrics must be hand washed. Iron the wrong side of the fabric on low (while it is still damp) without steam.
Taking Measurements
Using a flexible measuring tape, measure your body from the armpit down, aiming for a side to shoulder measurement and a bust measurement. Depending on your measurements, I recommend choosing between 20in and 22in and 50cm to 55cm (or 20in to 22in).
Cutting out
Cut a rectangle from fabric and then calculate the width and length of your dress. You must cut fabric very straight and precise following the grain; I recommend using the “pull out thread” method. In the upper right corner, draw a curve line between points 1 and 2. From the upper left corner, measure 30 cm (12 in) to the right (point 3).
Costruction
Make a narrow hem along all straight edges. Topstitch over the folded edges with a straight stitch setting on your sewing machine. Pin folded bias strip to the garment edge. Trim seam allowances to a width of 5 mm (3/16 in). Turn strip to inside, baste it, topstitch 7 mm (1/4 in) from the edge and press to one side.
Can you sew without a pattern?
One of the best places to start is with your own wardrobe. Take a close look at your favorite outfits and, if possible, disassemble them to see exactly how they’re put together, and use the pieces as guides for cutting your own.
How do you turn a dress into a dress pattern?
Using the old dress as a template, make a paper pattern.
- Turn the dress inside out, flat, and make sure it is not stretched or skewed in any way.
- Keep the center fold line along a long edge of the paper.
- Remove the dress and use a sketch pencil to make the lines clearer.
- Draft the front pattern in the same manner as the back.
